Open Source BIOS?

The open source BIOS project, LinuxBIOS is approaching being ready for the mainstream. At least according to OSNews it is:

After seven years of work, the LinuxBIOS project is on the brink of making a free BIOS a standard option for computers. Serious obstacles remain, including a lack of resources and resistance from some proprietary chipset manufacturers and OEMs, but the advantages of LinuxBIOS indicate that its availability to the average computer buyer may be only months away

Another step closer to fully open source computer? I’ll be giving it a try, when I find the time.

  1.
fully open source computer
You mean the fully open source software running on my closed source chip right – I don’t see you having your own fab plant :)

  2. Well yeah – but open hardware does exist (kinda).

It’s possible in theory at least.

  3. That open graphics thing looks quality. Would love to make some sort of Linux games console using that and some tiny form factor motherboard. It’ll be a while ’til that’s possible, though, and it’ll need its OpenGL pipeline pimped up.

    So what, can’t I dream?
